THE SELFISH GIANT – Oscar Wilde

Excerpt from Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant recited by Jan Lindrum

The Selfish Giant is one of five stories in the collection The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888) written by prolific Irish playwright, novelist, essayist, poet Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854-1898) (Oscar Wilde). In the early 1890s, Oscar Wilde was one of London’s most popular playwrights.

Only by reading the story of the man behind the work does one understand the work itself. For High School students and adults who have not come to the life and times of Oscar Wilde previously, Dr Jan strongly recommends a reading of Wilde’s De Profundis; a letter written by Wilde whilst imprisoned in Reading Gaol.
